Abstract

Three breeding colonies of Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) were found in the city of Genoa; they were placed in Pontedecimo, Sestri Ponente and Quarto. The colony of Pontedecimo, observed from March to August 2007, included 40 nests. The number of hatched eggs was 105, but only 87 fledged young were observed. The fledging rate (fledged/hatched young) was therefore 0.829; the mean number of hatched eggs/nest was 2.39, while the mean number of fledged young/nest was 1.98. The colonies of Sestri Ponente and Quarto, observed from March to July 2008, included 18 and 6 nests, respectively. Data collected in this study were compared with those detected in other heronries in Liguria and Piedmont, in order to evaluate the existence of differences in productivity and structure due to the urbanization level in the surrounding area.
