THE ROLE OF BOTANIC GARDENS IN THE THIRD MILLENNIUM
Abstract
Botanic gardens have been created over the past five hundred years to carry out a range of differentfunctions. There are currently over 2,500 botanic gardens in more than 150 countries, with over half of them
established in the past 50 years. A commonly accepted definition of a botanic garden is "An institution
holding collections of documented and living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation,
display and education".
