The paper aims at providing a conceptual analysis of marriage and family by analyzing the theoretical debate which has arisen over the topic of same-sex marriage. This way, we want to show how the ultimate reason why people oppose same-sex marriage is that it would threaten the very existence of sexual difference in marriage, upon which is based the different treatment of men and women inside the family. From this point of view, the same-sex marriage can have a queer effect on the institution of marriage itself, by destabilizing its heteronormativity.
Keywords: same-sex marriage, heteronormativity, family, homosexuality, queer.
