Abstract

The primary focus of the paper is to give insight into intersections of gender, nation and economic relations in Ukraine. A central focus is on the social construction of women’s role into the Ukrainian society regarding the definition, idealization and reproduction of national heteronormativity. Discourses about gender’s role both in private and public sphere are highly sexualized and used by Ukrainian state to reinforce heteronormativity, thus, constraining individual’s political performances. Prostitution, migration and women’s participation into public sphere are topics that are examined alongside perceived threats to an idealized version of normative gender and sexuality, especially through the idea of the heteronationalism.

Keywords: heteronormativity; sexual citizenship; nationalism; family structure.
