La sémantique d’Anna Wierzbicka et l’approche MSN: recherches et applications

Abstract

This article is devoted to a critical discussion of the research paradigm known as NSM (Natural Semantic Metalanguage), initiated by A. Wierzbicka in the early 70s. After having determined the theoretical basis of this paradigm, we follow its development over time, showing and commenting the results of latest research on semantic primes (by B. PEETERS). Due attention is also given to the NSM paraphrase, which permits a culturally-unbiased transmission of cultural concepts. Then, we try to define the peculiar epistemological position of NSM within linguistic semantics, between structuralism and cognitivism. Among the manifold applications of this approach, we focus on “cultural scripts” and cross-cultural studies. Finally, we highlight the interest of NSM as an open, fruitful and eclectic paradigm.
