From the Far North to the Metaverse: a journey through Teatro Colla’s "The Snow Queen"
Narrative twists and turns, adaptations and transformations of a puppet show (1982–2025)

This paper analyzes the adaptation strategies of Teatro Colla’s marionette show The Snow Queen (1982-2025), based on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale. Adopting the metaphor of the “migrant text”, the article intersects five analytical axes related to boundary crossing: diegetic migration (the journey of the protagonist Gerda); transmedial migration (the adaptation from fairy tale to the puppet stage); aesthetic migration (the breakthrough of the historical avant-garde); historical-diachronic migration (the variations the show underwent within the Colla repertoire); and, finally, technological migration (the Marionette 3.0 project by the University of Milan). The paper aims to demonstrate how the work’s relevance resides in its continuous renegotiation across time, media, and new performative spaces.
