Abstract

The aim of the article is to examine the motif of «danse macabre in the poem and the picture entitled «L’Enfant» («The child») from the collection «La Danse macabre du Québec» (1999) by Sergio Kokis. Although the analysis is based on the theories of Bernard Vouilloux, Rudolf Arnheim and Roman Ingarden, the theoretical essay «Les Langages de la création» written by Sergio Kokis is also included. First, the article briefly describes the development of «danse macabre» with particular reference to Sergio Kokis’ introduction to «La Danse macabre du Québec». The second part of the article analyses the poem and the picture «L’Enfant», comparing and contrasting the two works. By contrast, the aim of the analysis of «L’Enfant» in the final part is to offer the answer to the following questions: is the motif of «danse macabre» representative of Kokis’ concept of art and the artist? Is the relation between the artist and death typical of Kokis’ poetics?
