Abstract

Given that the Italian word «fede»can express either a spiritual meaning (belief in God) or a social, interpersonal meaning (loyalty, reliability), the article examines the translations of this word in the first three German versions of Machiavelli's Prince (Lenz 1692, Nemeitz 1714 and Steinwehr 1741) and in a modern one (Oppeln-Bronikowski 1990).
