Abstract

Connectives such as “on condition that”, "notwithstanding” or “except” play a crucial role in the interpretation of a text: they establish among the propositions of the text a network of relationships that defines its logico-semantic structure and that provides the interpreter with the necessary instructions to reconstruct the corresponding legal facts. Nevertheless, investigation into different types of legal documents reveals how both use and translation of such expressions are often inaccurate. In this contribution a number of inconsistencies are highlighted in the use and translation of connectives in European Union legislation, while a textual approach is suggested in tackling the ambiguities.
