Experiencing events and developing through them does not necessarily go along with understanding them. All the more so when events themselves are controversial and escape easy definitions, like those of May 1968. A material and chronological distance from them has allowed Régis Debray to understand the historical significance of Parisian riots much more thoroughly than contemporary witnesses. Going back to “Modeste contribution aux discours et cérémonies officielles du dixième anniversaire” (1978) 40 years after its publication, and in light of the material as well as cultural transformations of contemporary France, enables us not only to duly appreciate their visionary force, but also to do justice to their author, a rigorous intellectual and a dedicated militant.
