Abstract

The path of punishment has developed over the centuries, from corporal punishment to imprisonment to (hopefully) rehabilitation. With a view to resolutely proceeding towards the reintegration of prisoners into society, it is important to rethink existing penitentiary institutions from "forbidden cities" to multi-purpose organizations, capable of hosting not only the separate residential function, but also work, training, creativity, sport and sociability. Finally, it is essential to go beyond prison, transforming it from a "landfill of social malaise" to an extrema ratio for those who cannot be rehabilitated through alternative measures to detention.
