This article examines the way in which several newspapers, both generalist and specialist (Le Mercure de France, the Journal de Paris, the Décade philosophique, the Courrier des spectacles and the Journal des théâtres), reported on the theatrical news of 1799. This press review reveals the way in which the press reflects and disseminates to public opinion the contours and characteristics of a way of thinking about the theatre – or rather the theatrical – at a very particular moment, that of the end of the Directoire, which, in many respects, differs from what preceded it as well as from what will follow it.
