¿Neologismos con fecha de caducidad? El caso de "1984" y sus traducciones al español

Abstract

This little research project aims to analyse the changes which have occurred throughout the retranslation of literary neologisms in George Orwell’s oeuvre Nineteen Eighty-Four, seeking to observe if the passing of time has had any influence on the decisions each one of the translators made when translating the novel into Spanish. Due to the small extension of this publication, the corpus of study has been limited to five neologisms: Newspeak, Oldspeak, ink-pencil, telescreen and speak-write.

Two of these neologisms, Newspeak and Oldspeak, reflect on how current translational trends shift gradually from literary translations to more free ones. The remaining three, telescreen, speak-write and ink-pencil, refer to technological devices invented by Orwell when writing the novel, which have indeed been developed in the real world and are even a part of our daily life. Each one of them shows a different translational trend.
