Jeanne-Marguerite de Montmorency, the Solitaire of the Pyrenees: Fortune and Controversies of a Spiritual Correspondence

Abstract

The biography and works of Jeanne-Marguerite de Montmorency (1645-1700?), known as “the Solitaire of the Pyrenees,” have long been the subject of unresolved debates regarding their authenticity. A noblewoman turned anchoress and penitent, she is primarily known for her spiritual correspondence with Luc de Bray, parish priest of La Trinité in Châteaufort. However, several critics argue that these letters are in fact a fabrication serving anti-Quietist propaganda. Taking a neutral stance, this article focuses on the editorial and interpretative richness of the corpus, which reflects the fascination and controversy surrounding this figure for over three centuries. After a biographical overview highlighting the uncertainties surrounding her identity, the study examines the editorial history and reception of her work, as well as her role in the theological debate on Quietism in 17^th-century France. Finally, an analysis of key excerpts from the correspondence will shed light on the defining moments of an exemplary spiritual journey, which has captivated readers across different eras despite ongoing doubts about its authenticity.
