Abstract

The European Union is a unicum in the context of international organizations, due to its own prerogative of using 24 official languages. Even if English is the universal ‘tool’ for international communication, the European Union considers the co-existence of many languages in Europe one of its symbolic features, at the very base of the European citizenship and identity. It is also for this reason that the EU is firmly committed to defend the diversity of European literature.
Languages are constantly changing with the daily use as it is for Globish, a form of English which is spoken inside the European Union and not so familiar for the native English. The Europanto is a goliardic experiment to create a new institutional language with its own grammar and vocabulary as a result of a mix of the most used languages inside the Institutions.
The European Parliament is the institution more directly involved in defending multiliguism: in fact, it is the only one that translates all the official documents and provides interpretation services for all European languages.
