Abstract

From the nineties, Brazil has seen the publication of numerous literary works aimed atrepresenting the space of prison and the experience of imprisonment. Homicidalrepression, violence, degradation and abandonment urge the variousforms of literature to display the tragedy of detention. DrauzioVarella’sEstacaoCarandiru (1999), a novelbased on 1992’s massacre in the prison of Carandiru, and Prisioneiras (2017), in which the authorquestions the femaleprison world, botharise from thaturgency.  Through the criticalreading of thesetwonovels, thisarticleaims to analyze the dynamics ofpower in contemporary Brazil, highlighting the persistence of logicsrelated to colonialism and slavery.
