Comics – town – walking – representation – autobiographyAbstract
Based on Michel de Certeau's rhetorical description of “walking”, the paper characterizes the “urban experience” in three contemporary French comics, in relation to the spectacular effects of city representation. Les Petits riens, by Lewis Trondheim, Belleville Story, by Vincent Perriot, and Les Équinoxes, by Cyril Pedrosa, present a varied panorama ranging from a sketchbook to an adventure narrative, or a polyphonic comics of daily life. Each one offers a different approach, revealing the urban experience in an autobiographical setting, in its visual margins, or through a highly conscious urban flâneur.
